Suspect in Nanaimo mail box break-ins arrested in Surrey

34 year old Olie Alexander SMITH of Surrey, believed to be responsible for numerous recent thefts from Nanaimo apartment building mailboxes in November has been arrested in Surrey.

On November 17th SMITH was identified through video surveillance of breaking into two condominium buildings located on Promenade Drive. Several days later, SMITH allegedly broke into cars in downtown Nanaimo, and condominiums on Esplanade, Chapel and Poplar St. Investigators were able to lay numerous charges for this offences and had warrants issued for the following offences: Break and Enter x 5, Theft of Mail, Theft Under $5000, Mischief, Drive While Disqualified and Breach of Probation.

On December 1st, following a search warrant carried out on his residence, SMITH was arrested by Surrey RCMP who were assisted by the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team. As a result of the search, SMITH was then arrested for firearm and drug related offences, and remanded in custody to await his next court appearance set for December 19th in Surrey.
